The One Thing You Can Be to Create Positive Change on Planet Earth

December 13, 2010 by Kara-Leah Grant Leave a Comment

Image by Okan Caliskan from Pixabay by Kara-Leah, I'm feeling a real desire to simplify and streamline my life right now. Beyond what's the normal de-clutter of a spring-clean. Yesterday I watched a video which helped me clarify why this is so. Kiesha Crowther Little Grandmother is one of the 12 young Shaman wisdom keepers from the United States speaking clearly about what's going on in our world right now. It's nothing new. We've heard it all before. This is a crucial time for Planet … [Read more...]

Is it yoga if we ‘leave the mysticism behind’, or is it just a workout?

December 4, 2010 by Kara-Leah Grant 24 Comments

Yoga's just a way to get flat abs, right?

I forget sometimes that to many people yoga is just a workout. It's a way to stretch, to get a tight butt, to flatten the belly. I forget that Prana doesn't necessarily even exist for many people. Spirituality, energy, connection, divinity and all that kind of spiritual woo woo is pretty far out in most corners of NZ society. Most people aren't interested in any kind of spiritual enlightenment, or spiritual path when they go to a yoga class. They've got a wedding to go to next weekend … [Read more...]

How yoga helped me… recover from drug and alcohol addiction

November 22, 2010 by Guest Author 1 Comment

Looking for belonging

This is an on-going series of yoga stories from readers about how yoga has made a difference their life. To contribute your story, click here. Submitted by Clare S. (not her real name) of New Zealand Coming from a dysfunctional family, it is not really a surprise that I got involved with punk rockers and street kids in my early teens. I felt a sense of belonging, I was needed. I brought them food and snuck them home for showers and meals. It didn't take long for me … [Read more...]

How yoga helped me… stand tall, both literally and emotionally

November 11, 2010 by Guest Author Leave a Comment

Yoga can make us stand tall, in many ways

This is an on-going series of yoga stories submitted by Yoga Lunchbox readers. Tell us how yoga changed your lift here. By Anonymous I’ve been a sporty type for 10 years or so now I go through phases of running, biking, and weight training. Over the last 5 years I’ve found yoga and since then it has typically part been part of my weekly routine. I’m prone to very bad posture and yoga has taught me to be aware of my body. More specifically, it has helped me become aware of how nice … [Read more...]

Integrating Tantra practices into daily life

November 7, 2010 by Kara-Leah Grant 3 Comments

One of the most amazing experiences of my Prana Flow teacher training with Shiva Rea was our morning meditation and lecture sessions with Chris Tompkins, something I'll go into detail about in a future post. I've long wanted to establish an early morning practice, and having to be there most mornings at 7am for 12 days has done this. I was able to witness the effect of just sitting and connecting to the Self, the effect of using bija mantras every morning, and the way it set my entire day … [Read more...]

Diving into the flow of Fluid Power

November 3, 2010 by Kara-Leah Grant Leave a Comment

It's day number.... something? on my Prana Flow teacher training with Shiva Rea. The training is at Exhale Spa, Venice, California and the apartment I'm staying in with another student is a short walk along Venice Beach. Ah Venice Beach... like no other I've ever encountered. Shops and cafes on one side... a wide pavement of walkers, bikers, rollarbladers & skaters, dogs and skateboards in the middle... and vendors, musicians, and hanger-ons on the other side. Beyond the vendors … [Read more...]

Chanting through the chakras

October 31, 2010 by Jessica Powers 1 Comment

by Jessica Powers, The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit language and literally translates to ‘wheel’. Often described as ‘wheels of light’ a chakra is an energy center in the human body aligned with the spine and considered to be an interface between the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of an individual. Though there are many systems detailing the subtle anatomy of humans, some speaking of 12 or even 100s of chakras, the most common tradition is that of seven … [Read more...]

Yoga trippy – an Indian viewpoint of Western Yoga

October 29, 2010 by Guest Author 1 Comment

Yoga Trippy?

an essay by guest author Ali Halle Tilley Yoga is an ancient practice, which can bring transformation and liberation to the disillusioned, disenfranchised masses[1] of the Technological Age by combining universal moral codes and postural sequences, with breathing and meditation techniques. One main challenge for yoga practiced in the West, however, is the contagion of consumerism where yoga students and teachers buy into what is currently fashionable and dismiss what is genuine. This … [Read more...]

Everything is stable… until it’s not

Anusara Yoga Teacher Katie Lane

by guest author Katie Lane What the Christchurch earthquake is teaching me about stability. Just when I thought I’d found my roots...the ground shook. AGAIN. Tuesday morning, 11.32am. The biggest aftershock I felt since our original 7.1 magnitude earthquake in early September. Compared to the BIG event, this shake was minor. However, a 5.0 on any scale is really no small thing! The woman I was talking with on the phone started to cry and hung up the apologizing that she needed to call her … [Read more...]
