How to Cultivate Abundance on the Yoga Mat Part 1 {video}

November 11, 2014 by Kara-Leah Grant Leave a Comment

Abundance comes from the way we're connected to what nourishes us and the way in which we open ourselves to give & receive

by Kara-Leah Grant Welcome to the second Creative Sun Salutation flow here on The Yoga Lunchbox. As with the last six-part series, the first two episodes in this series are free for anybody to access, and the final four are for Insiders only. (You can become a member of Inside the Box here.) When I teach and practice yoga, my tendency is to work with different energies on the mat, cultivating those energies as required, depending what's going on in my life at that time. This particular … [Read more...]

The Well-Seasoned Yogi: Eleven Tips for Older People on Getting Started with Yoga

September 12, 2014 by Guest Author 2 Comments

Eve, forty three years of yoga practice and nearing her 70th year.

by guest author Eve Grzybowski, Yoga Suits Her A colleague of mine says; "If you can breathe, you can do yoga." Is that really so? Given that there are hundreds and probably thousands of yoga postures and practices, how do you go about choosing classes? In today’s climate with its infinity of yoga styles, what is the best choice for you? “Well," ... as the great Indian teacher, T.K.V. Desikachar was fond of saying; “It depends.” The class you choose or the practice you do depends on variables … [Read more...]

An Overview of Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga

September 10, 2014 by Kara-Leah Grant 1 Comment

This article is an edited extract from K-L's new book, The No-More-Excuses Guide to Yoga, from the section called Yoga History, Philosophy and Concepts. It's a huge topic area, but in seven chapters, there is a succinct overview of much of the territory you might come across in yoga class - including Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga.  by Kara-Leah Grant, author of The No-More-Excuses Guide to Yoga One of the most famous of the yogic texts is The Yoga Sutras. These were either written by, or … [Read more...]

Ashtanga: Why it’s so Important to Trust the Process

Working with knees... softly, softly...

by Kara-Leah Grant, Musings from the Mat One of the great gifts of sharing my internal processes of life so honestly on-line is that I learn from myself. Often, a few years after I’ve written an article, I will re-read it and see the illusions that I was labouring under at the time. Yes, the article is usually about an insight into a difficulty, but there is always another layer or level of illusion. Through re-reading my own articles I’m able to watch myself wake up and become more … [Read more...]

Ashtanga: I Don’t Want to Break My Knees

August 15, 2014 by Kara-Leah Grant 31 Comments

by Kara-Leah Grant My knees ache. They have been since about April of this year - about three months into a regular Mysore-style Ashtanga practice, two or three times a week. I also do a regular home practice of vinyasa, prana-led asana (slow and steady), meditation and pranayama. I've been able to do Half Lotus for some years now, including Standing Bound Half Lotus (without the forward fold). I have never had any prior knee issues or pain. Although my grandmother (maternal side) and mother … [Read more...]

June 26, 2014 by Kara-Leah Grant Leave a Comment

by Kara-Leah Grant Welcome to the fourth article and video in this series of Yoga Explorations. You've now learned how to spontaneously allow the body to move within the structure of a posture, as well as two breath pairs - the Ascending and Descending breath, and cultivating the core and radiating from the core breath. This week, we start to put it all together even more, using these tools to work with a posture to find alignment. In particular, we'll be exploring Lunge and variations … [Read more...]

How to Cultivate your Core and Radiate through Your Limbs {video}

June 12, 2014 by Kara-Leah Grant 2 Comments

by Kara-Leah Grant Welcome to the second in this series of Yoga Explorations. This week we're going to continue building on our sequence while exploring a second pair of breath movements. Tuning into these two breaths - inhaling and cultivating the core, exhaling and radiating through the limbs - helps us to find strength and integrity in postures. But for many of us, tuning into the breath movements within the pose can be difficult. We struggle to keep our awareness on the breath … [Read more...]

June 5, 2014 by Kara-Leah Grant 6 Comments

by Kara-Leah Grant This is the first in a six-part series of Yoga Explorations which takes you through a creative Mandala Surya Namaskar - or a circular sun salutation. The focus on this series is in teaching you how to use the breath to explore and play within your home practice. It's about giving you the confidence to step outside the usual linear flow of your practice and see what it is that your body needs moment to moment. The Eight Essentials of Restorative Yoga

April 23, 2014 by Guest Author 15 Comments

by guest author Neal Ghoshal, Sacred Moves A few years ago I enrolled on my second Yoga Teacher Training course for a year at the Yoga Academy Auckland - I was on a mission to learn more about this practice and to equip myself with as much knowledge as I could. If I was going to teach Yoga, then I wanted to be good at it. About half way through the year, course tutor Jude Hynes gave us a new practice, brought out some Yoga bolsters from the cupboard and introduced us to the wonderful world of … [Read more...]

There’s More to Us Than Meets The Eye: Exploring The Five Koshas

February 18, 2014 by Guest Author Leave a Comment

The Koshas

By Trish Brown, co-director of Dru Yoga Australia If you have ever suspected that there was more to you than just your physical body, yoga philosophy reveals that you are right. According to ancient yoga texts, we are indeed much more than just the physical, being made up of five distinct layers known as the koshas. The koshas are often compared to the layers of an onion. If you can see the physical body as the outer layer, traveling inwards through more subtle layers of energy, emotion and … [Read more...]
