Yoga May Not Cure Disease, But It Can Help Us To Live Joyfully With Our Illnesses

August 17, 2017 by Guest Author 1 Comment

by John Guthrie, Yoga Aotearoa | International Yoga Teachers Association of New Zealand The whole notion of disease is an interesting subject. Those of us who take on yoga as a part of our lifestyle can easily find ourselves striving to be absolutely whole and well; after all, why shouldn't we? To have a strong healthy body fit that enables us to integrate the various limbs of yoga is a noble endeavour indeed. But is perfect physical health always a guaranteed result of a yoga practice? And … [Read more...]

Yoga & Back Pain: Could Fear Sometimes be the Real Cause of Pain?

March 17, 2014 by Kara-Leah Grant 10 Comments

by Kara-Leah Grant I've had plenty of opportunities in my life to study pain, often on a daily basis. And now, based on this study and my experiences, I'm wondering: Can fear cause physical pain - like sciatic pain? Here's a rundown on why that might be: In May of 1991, when I was fifteen years old, I started experiencing sciatic pain down my left leg. Of course, I didn't know what it was, and put up with it for a few months. I noticed it was difficult to sit for extended periods of time, or … [Read more...]

Yoga Injuries and Pain During Yoga Class – What’s the Story?

We can injure ourselves in yoga class

by Kara-Leah Grant, Musings from the Mat Matthew Remski is currently researching asana-related injuries in an attempt to understand what we are actually doing with yoga, and how we can know the value or safety of the postures we practice. After taking the time to read his first article on the subject - What Are We Actually Doing in Asana - I found myself asking questions about my practice and the pain I sometimes experience in yoga. In particular, Matthew says: I would like to explore … [Read more...]

The Benefits of Chasing Pain and the Gifts of Living with an Auto-Immune Disease

Aching joints mean even opening jars is impossible

by guest author Emma Fernbloom, former owner of The Dunedin Yoga Studio It wasn’t that long ago I was standing in front of a room full of people and assuring them that if they practice yoga regularly, not only would all of their health problems disappear but they would be successfully avoiding old age, loss of vitality and disease. I was glowing with my own certainty that I had found the keys to a healthy fulfilled life. I was strong, flexible and graceful. I was meditating every day and … [Read more...]

Rolling with Gangaji and how she scuttled my boat Part 2

March 6, 2011 by Alys Titchener 3 Comments

Gangaji

My first impression of Gangaji, the person in real life, left me a little surprised. On the YouTube clips, I remembered her being a wise and encompassing energy, a presence larger than life with a chameleon of hairstyles. When I opened my eyes as we finished our coming-together mediation, I saw the energy of a child sitting up on stage. She was calm and so innocent. Her distinctive locks of hair were pulled back into a neat librarian’s bun. This is Gangaji? Slowly her presence filled … [Read more...]
