The benefits and pitfalls of conscious community

Consciously creating space

by Aly Titchener Living in an intentional community in the city Given the discussions I often hear around me, and the positive reception from Jennifer’s recent article about family friendly spiritual communities, it seems like there are many people wanting to be involved at some level in a spiritually motivated community. Not only being a part of such a community group, there appears to be a growing swell of people wanting to live within a conscious and intentional community. I’ve … [Read more...]

Be a Tree: Interpretive Yoga for Adults

April 16, 2011 by Jessica Powers Leave a Comment

It’s Autumn: trees are delighting us with a riot of colour, littering the ground with jewels from their branches. We can take a hint from Mother Nature and enjoy a similar process ourselves, letting go of old, stagnant, nonessentials. Releasing has many more nuances than just ‘getting rid’ of something. Pay attention to Nature move through a full cycle of gestation, birth, growth, and decay and you’ll see letting go as making space. Indeed, Spring blossoms and leaves come to be … [Read more...]

Dude, where’s my teacher?!

April 11, 2011 by Kara-Leah Grant 23 Comments

Dude, where's my yoga teacher?

I've been totally short-changed on my yoga journey. Never once have I had a Real Yoga Teacher. You know - the kind you have an on-going relationship with.. the kind who supports your yoga journey parsing out morsels of wisdom and insight at the exact moment you need them... the kind who's interested in your development and answers all your questions. Nope, thanks to some cruel twist of fate, I've been left to blunder through the mine field of yoga all by my lonesome. Partly this … [Read more...]

Chakra Vinyasa: Meeting the Energy Body

April 9, 2011 by Jessica Powers 2 Comments

The rainbow of chakras

You've seen the colours and the shapes - geometric designs in vibrant shades on yoga clothing, jewelry, and various yogic accoutrements. Teachers may have asked you to direct your attention to the 'third eye' between your eyebrows, or asked you to press your hands together in a prayer gesture at the 'heart center.' Some one might have mentioned 'kundalini' or similarly foreign words while directing you through a breath practice, alternatively closing one nostril and then the other. Yet … [Read more...]

I’m not flexible enough to do yoga

April 5, 2011 by Alys Titchener 36 Comments

by guest author Alys Titchener It took me years to turn up to a yoga class. Years and years of liking the idea of yoga before actually appearing on a yoga mat. Why? Whenever I confessed I’d never done a yoga class; I’d always append the confession with – I’m not flexible enough. Never have been. I got dropped from the gymnastics club at the age of eight because I couldn’t reach my toes. I could do handstands, I could vault, I could balance on the beam, but I couldn’t touch my toes. Perhaps … [Read more...]

Honouring the changing season with gratitude, release and acceptance of change

April 1, 2011 by Kara-Leah Grant 4 Comments

The leaves are changing here in New Zealand

I noticed the first leaf changing colour this week, on the tree outside the window in front of the kitchen sink. There's no denying while the days are still bright and hot here in Paekakariki, it's cooler in the shade or in the breeze, and night falls faster. Summer is but a whisper on the wind as autumn embraces us. 'Tis a time to feel grateful for the plentifulness of summer - the endless hot, cloudless blue sky days spent at the beach or the river, the good times spent with family … [Read more...]
