Learning to soften

by guest blogger Lia Aprile of Shanti-Town If you've got your own website and would like to write a guest article for The Yoga Lunchbox on anything related to yoga or meditation, get in touch. I have recently started a meditation practice.  Again. I am several weeks in at this point, and things have been going pretty well so far, but the last week of this new-found practice has coincided with a particularly rigorous yoga schedule (there's some ass-kicking virus going around, … [Read more...]

An interview with Donna Farhi

May 31, 2010 by Kara-Leah Grant 3 Comments

Donna Farhi

I first discovered Donna Farhi in my local library in Queenstown. Her book Yoga Mind, Body and Spirit: A Return to Wholeness was liberating, informative and challenging. She taught not asana by asana, this body part in that body place, but through universal principles that underlay every asana. It was a watershed moment in my Yoga journey as my home practice had begun to diverge from anything resembling a standard hatha class. With Donna's book within easy reach, I felt able to honour the … [Read more...]

Being Still for a Change – Why Meditating is a Response to Climate Change

September 27, 2009 by Guest Author Leave a Comment

by guest author Christine Dann, writer, researcher, teacher and Green activist October 24, 2009 is a day with a difference, one that will go down in history as the first international day of grass roots action on climate change. Hopefully it will be the last such day, because the world leaders meeting at the December climate change conference in Copenhagen will get  the message - stop protecting the profits of big business and start protecting people and other living beings by committing to … [Read more...]

What is Ayurveda all about?

One aspect of Ayurveda is about using food to find balance

In this article David explains his journey into Ayurveda, and it's application to our lives. by Guest Author David Timbs ND, Dip Ayur (India), Dip Acup, BEd One does not discover Ayurveda, or discover that Ayurveda is something removed from whom we are. Ayurveda by definition is “the Science of Life and Longevity”, we are already ‘in’ Ayurveda as long as we are already ‘in’ life. … [Read more...]

Day 32 to 35: Forty Day Sadhana of Sodarshan Chakra Kriya

February 9, 2009 by Kara-Leah Grant 5 Comments

It happened on Thursday. It was the end of the week, as here in New Zealand we celebrate Waitangi Day on February 6th which was Friday last week. I finished work and met my partner at his workplace to catch a ride up to his boss's house to get our car. His boss lives on top of a hill with panoramic views of Wellington, and he invited us in for a drink on the patio. A couple of wines and some conversation later, it was back to our house for a much needed meal. And then, pleasantly … [Read more...]

Day 22 to 31: Forty Day Sadhana of Sodarshan Chakra Kriya

February 2, 2009 by Kara-Leah Grant 2 Comments

I'm a-changin'... of that there is no doubt. And it's the most wonderful thing. In situations that I would have run a mile from just three or so weeks ago, I find myself stepping up to the plate, beating heart and all, and dealing with calmly and clearly. This week during my eleven minute practice of sodarshan chakra kriya, I have found myself breathless far more than last week. It's important in pranayama not to force anything, so when I feel breathless, I have a choice. Do I push on … [Read more...]

Committing to a Forty Day Sadhana of Sodarshan Chakra Kriya

January 2, 2009 by Kara-Leah Grant 6 Comments

As an avid reader of Steve Pavlina's blog, Personal Development for Smart People, I have long admired his tenacity in determining a course of action and sticking to it. He is the champion of the thirty day trial - a process whereby he'll try something out for thirty days to see how it impacts his life. After thirty days, the practice is sufficiently ingrained into his day so that if the results have been beneficial, it is simple to carry on. It's a great way to make a lifetime commitment to … [Read more...]

James Bryan in kapilasana

By Guest Author James Bryan, of Knoff Yoga For those of us who practice Hatha Yoga (asana, pranayama and meditation), when we are pressed for time, meditation often gets set aside – we want to do it, but how to fit it in our busy day?  To get the full benefit of what Hatha Yoga offers, we do need to meditate and in this article, we will look at a few reasons for setting up a daily routine to include it. … [Read more...]
