Following rave reviews and sell out screenings in New York, London, Munich and Melbourne, NZ film maker Kate Clere returns home for exclusive presentations of Yogawoman in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin from April 12-19.
Yup, this awesome film is premiering on the big screen, and there are Q & A sessions afterward with the filmmakers.
Excited?
I sure as hell am! Plus we’ve got five double-passes to give away (see below), and a video interview with Kate down below to get you pumped.
Narrated by Annette Bening and directed by Kate Clere McIntyre and Saraswati Clere, Yogawoman was filmed in nine countries and featuring fifty of the world’s leading yoga experts. It’s is the first film to capture the phenomenon of women’s roles in the explosion of yoga throughout the world.
Women’s participation in yoga is a global shift that has changed the face of yoga forever and transformed the lives of millions of over-stimulated, over-scheduled multitasking modern women.
In personal interviews, women around the world reveal how yoga has helped them face conditions like breast cancer, infertility, anxiety and depression, given them strength to recover from abuse and eating disorders, and helped them through pregnancy, motherhood, and menopause.
Although an estimated 17 million women in North America practice yoga today, and have made it a multibillion-dollar industry, it was originally a rigid discipline taught and practiced primarily by men. Led by a new generation of dynamic female teachers, modern yoga has been adapted for a woman’s body and needs, and has evolved into a practice that supports activism on behalf of people and the planet.
Yogawoman also features Christchurch Yoga teacher Donna Farhi who has been practicing for 35 years and teaching since 1982. She is one of the most sought after guest teachers in the world. Farhi says:
“I think Yoga is one of the most politically subversive practices that any person, male or female could do in our time”.
I have to agree with her! Yoga empowers us, as we learn to listen to, and trust, the wisdom available to us in every moment from our own hearts. It teaches us to attends to our needs, to care for ourselves, to value truth, and to stand strong.
The film also introduces mainstream audiences to top teachers, many of whom have become worldwide icons with rock-star status in the yoga community, such as Patricia Walden, Shiva Rea, Seane Corn, Sharon Gannon, Cyndi Lee, Elena Brower, plus forward-thinking medical professionals such as integrative physician Dr. Sara Gottfried and world-renowned research scientist Dr. Shirley Telles.
Here’s a short video interview with director Kate Clere McIntrye. Enjoy!
WIN! A Double-pass to see Yogawoman, one prize available for each of the five cities – Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin & Queenstown.
Just tell us why you’re excited to see Yogawoman, and in what city you live.
We’ll do a random draw for each of the five cities on Monday March 26th @ 6pm NZ time, either picking the answer we love the best, or if we can’t choose, using a random number generator.

WOW
Yoga on film!
goosebumps!
It looks amazing, would so love to see this at the Roxy in Wellington….
I would love to go to this movie. I’ve had an on-again-off-again relationship with yoga for almost 20 years but I’m always happier when its ‘on’. Since I had my daughter a couple of years ago I’ve tried to keep it up as much as I can so she is exposed to it as much as possible. We go to Yoga Tots together and at the moment it is just fun for her to do downward dog and climb up the wall in half handstand but eventually I hope it will give her real life tools and be a source of inspiration to do good in the world. I’m not sure how this makes me worthy of the free tickets but if they come my way I’ll be truly grateful:)
PS I’m in Auckland:)
Hi Jen,
This is a bit of an urgent reply ….If you haven’t received a free ticket yet I can arrange one but in turn need you to do YogaPass a favour… I am in Sydney and the person collecting the mats ( see http://www.facebook.com/yogawoman.tv) for community yoga has been waylaid in Sydney. It would be brilliant if you were able to collect them for us …it may be 0 or it may be 4 ..Let me know if you get this reply !!! A bit of a non yogic time frame. More background on http://www.yogapass.com.au/lovearth-mats/
As a practicing yogi and a documentary film-maker, this seems the perfect subject matter for me, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the film when it hits Wellington!
Yet another yogawoman who’d love to watch this movie at the Roxy in Miramar, Wellington. 🙂
A must-see whether I get the double pass or not. But would be chuffed to win.
I am always fascinated to see the effects that yoga has on people, especially the unexpected ones. And the ways people find to practice yoga – on the mat and off. As someone who travelled on a boat for 5 years, I was constantly challenged to practice. But I found that while my practice was less frequent during this time, it was more mindful, and has led me to establish a near daily practice now for the first time.
Hi Kara-leah,
I am really excited to learn about this movie, it spoke to me! … I can tell you that this yogawoman, whom lives somewhat remotely, whom has limited oppurtunity to immerse in all things yoga, would gratiously embrace the chance to “go out” and sink my soul in yoga conciousness, by watching a movie about “yogawoman” , in Queenstown.
Either way I will defiantly be going!
Thanks for sharing Kara-leah very proud and inspired that this movie is co-directed by a Kiwigal, paving the way….
Namaste
i would love to win these tix to give to my sister, (at the roxy/welly)
she is on a beautiful yogic path …x
I can’t wait to see this movie! I only just started practising in October but yoga (specifically hot yoga) has completely changed my life. I’m even considering joining my studio’s teacher training course in April. On top of that, I majored in women’s studies back at uni, so this movie sounds like a completely perfect mix of my passions.
And I live in Auckland 🙂
I have recently moved back to Auckland after starting my yoga journey in London, thanks to a friend who invited me to practice wih her amazing teacher. Now we are living in the same city again, I would love to take her to the movie as a thank you for introducing the best exercise for mind, body and soul into my life.
As a yogini and teach I aim to inspire as many people as I can to take up yoga and start to live their life with deeper awareness and connection to themselves. I would love to go to the premiere and get inspired, and pass on to others.
As a “YogaWoman” myself, I reckon this film is a must-see. (Wellington)
I want to go with Elissa to the Roxy in Miramar to see this too. 🙂
So looking forward to the Auckland premiere! I have my ticket, but I’d love the double pass to take my teachers along too
Ok…
Just did the draw for the five double passes. Awarded one double pass each to the only Queenstown and Dunedin entries (Dunedin was via email) to Carmen (Queenstown) and Kate (Dunedin).
The draw for the Auckland tickets went to Tina. And Wellington went to Elissa. No one nominated Christchurch as their city, so did a final draw out of all the remaining names… and Nikki won that double pass.
Will be in touch re. tickets. Everyone else, book your tickets now so you make sure you don’t miss out… and I’ll see you at the Roxy!
