Top Ten Best Yoga Articles of 2017

December 29, 2017 by Lucinda Staniland 1 Comment

by Lucinda Staniland

It’s always fascinating to see which of the many articles we publish at The Yoga Lunchbox truly strike a chord with the online Yoga community.

This year, personal, authentic stories about yoga and meditation in daily life proved to be as popular as ever.

When guest author Sandi White opened up about her 40 Days of Yoga practice her article took off on social media, as did Neal Ghoshal’s perceptive insights about iRest Yoga Nidra, and my musings on what I wish I knew before I started Yoga.

I was thrilled to see that the first-ever edition of our Influencer Roundup, The Community Speaks, made it to the Top 10. Our influential yogis did a brilliant job of drilling into the question: What’s the greatest challenge facing the yoga community right now?

But the true stars of 2018? The Yoga teachers.

Yes, Yoga teachers who are embracing a kind, inquisitive and, above all, non-dogmatic path were truly the highlight of this year at The Yoga Lunchbox. Interviews with Leslie Kaminoff, Amy Ippoliti and Cathy Gamba all made it into the Top 10, as did not one but two articles from the brilliant Donna Farhi.

It makes sense to me that we’re drawn to these fierce but gentle leaders in this time of uncertainty and instability. 2017 has been a challenging year on many fronts: politically, economically and environmentally, but perhaps these wise teachers can be a guiding light, helping us to survive, thrive and care for ourselves and others, even in the midst of struggle.

9. The Simple Trick That Transformed My Meditation Practice

The Simple Trick That Transformed My Meditation Practiceby Lucinda Staniland. I’m a perfectionist. I love getting things exactly right. So when I got interested in meditation, I had a lot of questions about how I should be doing it: How long should I meditate for? Eyes open or closed? Should I focus on the breath or chant a mantra? Visualise chakras or empty my mind completely? I tried all these things. But somehow, no matter what I did, I felt like I was never quite getting it right. Meditation always felt like hard work to me. It was … [Read more…]

6. What Is iRest® Yoga Nidra Meditation and How Can It Help You?

What Is iRest® Yoga Nidra Meditation and How Can It Help You?by Neal Ghoshal. As the popularity of Yoga continues to expand, more and more people are being drawn into practices beyond Yoga asana (posture), into breath work, into meditation, into the subtler aspects of the tradition. One of the practices that is becoming increasingly lauded is Yoga Nidra. I first came across Yoga Nidra back in 2003 when learning to teach at the Ashram Yoga School in Parnell, Auckland. 3. 10 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Yoga

10 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Yogaby Lucinda Staniland. Most of us come to yoga with a whole lot of misconceptions about what yoga is. I was no different. Here are some of the mistakes that I made, and lessons that I learnt, as a new yoga student. 1. Asana does not equal yoga. When I started doing yoga I was awed by the strength and grace of the physical practice I saw my fellow students doing. I couldn’t wait for the day when I too would move with such beauty. I fell in love with asana. But asana (physical postures) is not … [Read more…]
