This yoga studio should definitely be included in your list. Upon completion of teacher training and some other programs- Bridgitte will introduce the class to her “real yoga teacher” Reyji (aka Andreas, Michel, Jaime ) from the re-establieshed Buddhafield cult. These classes are set up for pure indoctrination. I belive most, if not all of the teachers are cult members. With this article you’ve shot yourself in the foot! Why would anyone join your Yoga course?! Naming Paramhamsa Yogananda & Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the list of other dubious characters is a scandal in itself. Perhaps you may want to add Swami Vivekananda & Sri Aurobindo and shoot the other leg too?! Gossip at its best!
I would like to invite people to really read the work of Bhagwan or check his YouTube video’s (also named as Osho)
Because it might well be that you come to another conclusion than that Bhagwan is a fraud like it is mentioned here.
To me it seems very unfair what you read this article If you know more about this enlightened man.

Wow, an awful lot of unsubstantiated accusations here! “Has been accused of”, “allegations never proven”, but you go ahead and publish the accusations and the allegations which give them further credence. Are you trying to be a journalist or simply a rumor monger?

We’re not trying to be journalists or rumour mongers, we’re starting a conversation about the abuse of power that goes on in the yoga world. As you have noticed, not all of the allegations have been ‘proven’, (although some of them certainly have), but this doesn’t mean that they should be dismissed or ignored… It’s not about slandering Gurus, it’s about having a conversation about the very real and prevalent abuse of power that goes on in the yoga community.
Thank you for publishing this list. It has been very discouraging for me to learn about these things on my own. I always do research first, typing in a teachers name followed by the words fraud or scandal. If u just type in their name, all sorts of glowing accounts may appear and not a word about the negative. Its bad enough when theres dirt, but its worse when people knew and did nothing, said nothing or actively covered it up.
I take a rather hard view: if the teacher is not walking the talk, im not interested. For me, spiritual life is hard enough. I want to learn from the best , those who practice what the preach because they fully Know the Truth. No silly worldly stuff like sex or money will take them from the path.
Do you have any information about Mohanji? It also seems like he is a fraud. I found these stories about him online:

He is a fraud too. He, along with his team very efficiently makes his followers (a bunch of women, who are actually very efficient in duping more women into joining his group) believe that he is a God. He has a very active group of cyber experts, who do not allow any criticisms/accusations posted on the internet. If you check the link you posted, you’ll see that it has been made private and you can never access it even if you place a request for access. Mohanji’s IT team has made it inaccessible for the common people. He is involved in sexual malpractices as well as financial ones.

Every teacher has had his or her scandal . Even Jesus.True or false it shakes our faith. In the end we have to hang on to the teachings. These are what show us the way to live a contented and peaceful life.

To you knowledge is there ANY yoga that has not had a guru that has been involved with some sex scandal? I started out listening to yogi bhajan. I still value much of what I have learned from him, however he has some questionable things as well. I am really interested in the spiritual side of yoga, yet every line of yoga seems to be interrupted with a leading guru with skeletons in their past. If someone has truly reached oneness with God, then this would not happen. I realize we are human and have not yet transcended, but it makes one question all the teachings from said persons.

A real teacher of any aspect of Yoga will keep it in a proper Hindu context and will not focus on the physical (Hatha Yoga). They will teach ethics and devotion (Karma and Bhakti Yoga). Then, the student will be properly introduced into meditation (Raja Yoga) and a deeper study. This is a good foundation but also keep vigilant to any abuse.
Havng lived at an ashram and learned from a so called guru, amrit desai, all i can say your notion of the guru disicple relarionship and student teacher dynamic is idyllic, with zero basis in reality. This is from working with the man day after day for almost three years, and then trqvelling to other ashrams. These little gurumen created a dialogue and language around spiritual growth that makes people vulnerable to abuse.
“What good is it to have gained the world, but sold your soul to do so?” ….. I have never seen an authentic yoga guru, they have all been predatory. I cant find one that hasnt a cloud of scandal. even if not substantiated, where there is smoke, there is fire. Ive seen too many good people get hurt because people refused to consider the allegastions true, and supported the fake guru in their abuses.
Often times this is done in the name of love, yet it is really spiritual ignorance and pernicious hatred of humanity when beliefs are put before love. There is no love in yoga, the industry is comoletely corrupt.
If the person says they are a guru, they are fake, evil and predatory.

I met Krishnapriya when she moved to salt springs. For some reason, she decided to help Amrit again. She had no health insurance, and left when she was diagnosed with cancer and needed genuine support.
Ive watched Amrit hit on young women. Ive watched him tell people that yoga will cure then of wanting to commit suicide and remove a persons need for medication …. and personally know three people who have committed suicide involved with his group, and have read of others.
There is zero accountability with these individuals. They are compassionless, selling god for personal gain. Their actions literally bring people to despair and death, and they do not care.
They should start advertising yoga as an initiation into human sexuality; then there would be fewer entering ashrams with mistaken notions.

Yogi Bhajan has an extensive abuse history and the practice he “brought to the west” he essentially made up. There is a great article titled The Construction of Yogi Bhajan’s Kundalini Yoga written by Philip Deslippe of the University of California that I suggest anyone who is interested in Kundalini Yoga read.
I think Yogi Bhajan and Kundalini Yoga should be added to this list.

This idea that if we are truly enlightened we don’t have desires. Maybe we have to remember that as long as we are on earth in our bodies, we are never 100% enlightened and then these things would not happen. Catholic priests and anyone who thinks they can go through life without sex is just fooling themselves and setting themselves up for failure. Maybe if many of these gurus were busy at home having sex with their partner, they would not be sexually abusing others???
I think the last real gurus were the 10 sikh gurus sent by God
Aaron, you sound like a responsibly skeptical person. I am one, too. I would encourage you to look into the historical and textual basis for all of the yogic/tantric teachings. There is a vast volume, and a lengthy history of previous teachers/masters. All of the modern teachers are just cribbing from that infinite, timeless wisdom which has been carried forward (better by some than others) into modern times.
While none of us can comment with certainty on the legitimacy of any current or past teacher, it’s quite difficult to argue that ALL of them, and these texts, were corrupted. Don’t be too attached to the messenger or the teacher. It’s about the message.
One common theme in that message is each of our own potential to become one with the divine. So long as you guided by that sincere desire, the right teacher/teachings will undoubtedly manifest for you. All the best in your journey, and remember that is yours and yours alone. No teacher or guru can walk it for you.
It’s sad that vulnerable people continue to be abused by those they turn to for guidance. The hypocrisy within the yoga and “spiritual” – new age communities is beyond palpable. Thanks for having the courage to facilitate this dialogue.
Very sad to see the abuses that occur and re-occur. Of course they will and can happen, because we are all flawed, even those who claim transcendence, who claim enlightenment, who claim to be “beyond” the spiritual domain of ordinary people. No one alive has transcended his or her own humanity! This does not mean that there aren’t great people out there, deeply thoughtful persons who have enormous enlightenments to share. In addition, this does not mean that all such persons choose to harm or abuse.
In my opinion, those persons who claim some kind of nearly unattainable “otherworldliness” (or who do not dispute those claims when made of them by others) are potentially the most dangerous “spiritual” leaders. Like the many priests within the Catholic faith, they attract a small herd of bright-eyed, blindly faithful followers–persons who are honest and seeking and earnest in their spiritual journeys. These persons can become modern-day disciples; I don ‘t mean that in a negative sense. But I wonder whether their discipleship is what makes their teacher’s abuses, sexual or otherwise, possible.
No man or woman, no matter his/her status in the spiritual world, should ever be beyond question. Trust is something that is built, yes, but also proven and re-proven vis-à-vis our daily behaviors. When we each take the responsibility to think critically, to question intelligently, to observe courageously, then we become better able to rise above the shock and ego-loss that happens when we discover that one of our teachers is deeply in the wrong. Through this process, I believe we can experience a kind of transcendence, one tied to the unflinching pursuit of truth.
Unfortunately (and understandably), too many seekers have too much to lose should their mentor truly behave in such horrific ways. Therefore seekers cannot always see what is happening exactly in front of them–to do so would be to absorb a loss that is almost untenable. Read what the families of the victims of the Catholic Church scandal say about such a dynamic. Study how members of the Church now realize how they enabled the predation of priests upon their own children. It was not only church officials who carried responsibility for this. Ask the parents, the congregants, as I have.
If you remain offended by these accusations levied by women (and men), then I would challenge you to ask yourself why. Do you have something large to lose, should they be true? How would your life change, if this reality were to become the new reality within which you had to locate your own story?
Of course, to accuse someone of a reprehensible act that they did not actually commit is a great injustice. However, if you take the time to look at the enormous numbers of studies concerning sexual abuse, you will find that the overwhelming majority of research literature suggests that such accusations are underreported, not the other way around. Therefore, the onus is upon each one of us to listen attentively to the claims of abuse, rather than to engage in a knee-jerk response that defends those persons accused. I am absolutely not suggesting that an accused does not have the right to represent his/her “side of the story.” Rather, I’m suggesting that the accused, not his/her disciples, should have the largest ego-investment in establishing his/her own guilt or innocence. Also he/she should have the greatest responsibility to do so. Why wouldn’t we expect that those in leadership/teaching positions fully address the questions that have been raised about them?
Finally, may I ask this of you: Are you able to meditate, to sit quietly and question yourself when you feel triggered about these accusations? Might you ask yourself–what do I have at stake if these accusations prove to be true (or false even)? I humbly and compassionately suggest that you try to ask these things of yourself, before you are tempted to fling mud at the many persons who have come forward with their stories of pain and humiliation. I believe they are valuable questions to answer, regardless of the outcome these accusations produce.
Name the real issue…it’s in all religions, governments, churches, schools, courts, offices, and bedrooms. Patriarchy. Yes, male supremacy. Smash it!

There are NO gurus. Only teachers of technique. Yoga is a multi-billion $ industry. Every major industry has its touts. The very nature of this argument is 100% barren. Why? In my opinion, NO person with the slightest understanding of yogic mindset will rape anybody..forget about violent or aggressive sex they are accused of!! To be associated with rape is simply not yoga..

HOWEVER….when mounting human-caused crises are taking place on earth and environemt is negatively impacted on a large enough scale a move is on to expose what is for what it is and move into a favourable course (like the flow of a stream blocked by fallen trees..the force of the water will.make a course around it)…..in life (which is eternal) you are the director and it’s any way you choose yet that doesn’t make you free…knowing the reality will make you see how trapped humanity is and firstly your realization will shed light on the things which threaten your peace or attempt to hamper it which keep cropping up….the critical number of the awakened on earth which can turn all on of course has not been reached but the evolutiom is surely speeding up…let’s hope before 2025..the first quarter of this century is nuclear threshold time…the numbers of people taking magic mushrooms to cross over to the other side of life is increasing and there are people now pre-planning their trips using affirmations…mantras and visualizations….workable knowledge that you are creator of your own reality is on the rise….the poisons of beer and cigarettes are prevalent as these are the sanctioned tools of governments to keep people locked into the shitstem..to keep them numbed and puking…arguing..fighting…killing..having accidents and dying of.diseases…seek the dirt…seek the land…go out and evolve on it…I will just add that now we have reached the time of no right or wrong..it’s almost open slather….humanity is ripe to cross over when enough people are having breakthru mushroom trips at night and in nature but the dumbphone…tv and movies are keeping thrid eye blocked and closed…therefore it is a time of huge potential yet also intesifying frustration…if enough people have not leaned how to let go of sex..beer…cigarettes and all sorts of harmful medications humanity will be extinct by 2025…a nuclear conclusion and all lives continue on the other side where advancements take.much longer and involve much more suffering compared to the huge leaps that can be made on earth and which are retained after death

it’s gone….so what does it essentially mean? nothing….if it is nothing after the fact then what is it while I am thinking feeling and saying? nothing…stop being a slave to stagnant info whose nature is ever-changing and be a master of ever-changing info which you know has no reality…wake up and control your dream while living it..realize the infinite while functioning as a component of the infinite knowing what you do has meaning on a level relative to your physical existence and in the big picture has no meaning due to impermanence…you are somebody and nobody at the same time…how much longer can humanity torture itself in the contraction and heavy delusion of details? get out of yourself to know you are all of it and you won’t bother to make issues out of minor things…if a build-up of minor things bugs you make a move away from the triggers…if the system is sick and you feel sick in it or are told you are sick just look at the primary sickness and make a move in relation to that…do not seek a leader because you are it….in a group of awakened people all will be their own master….all will be friends and disputes will be non-existent…the truth for all to know is this…not just every person you can see including you but everything you see in this dimension and the next is another aspect of you…you are appearing here in a particular form but with each day year and lifetime the appearance changes…if not in one form you’ll be in another and this is one of the infinite reasons why there is no such thing as death…the reality is all are components of one…this is the realization of unification in multiplicity….stop eating meat…start meditating by following the breath lightly and with eyes closed while seated and in morning before food in thru nose and out thru slightly open mouth until breath becomes very fine and you are filled with the stillness power (prana) and chant aum often to make the transition…this means clean out the channel to third eye and vibrate your pineal gland using aum to produce more endogenous DMT….vibrate your entire body with aum…a viable option and something which is likely needed to speed up human evolution is after a few trial runs on small doses have a solitary breakthru mushroom trip in nature at night and then after that breathru your meditation may be more effective…this is a technique to use when blocks are severe and progress is difficult…if there is no relief for your current state which makes you miserable then you have to look at a mushroom ttrip to push thru the blocks and rrealize the source of your problems to resolve them….breathing lightly and with visualization in meditation is the soft way..the longer more balanced way to evolve…the kundalini is awakened….mushrooms are the fast track for kundalini awakening and ecstasy and many things can go wrong for you so you must move into it with light doses to begin…peace to all

What about female yoga instructors who are also doing this? Married women who are also doing this to their male clients. This recently happened to my partner in Decatur Ill. Is there a way to report the studio and the instructor doing it? This isn’t just a male issue, its a human issue. And it needs to be addressed. Thank you.

The picture of Vishnu-Devananda still stands on the altars in the Sivananda center in Reith, Austria (and probably in the others too), what a shame, what an ignorant and disrespectful signal … how much wiser it would be to remove them and to clear the situation in a more humble way.
After 20 years of attending classes at Sivananda Yoga, I can no longer do so. Devotees are micro-managed from the moment they wake up in the morning to the minute they fall asleep at night. Social relationships are discouraged. Followers walk around with downcast eyes. They text each other rather than talk to simply inform the other person that they are practicing silence. Students pay to work there. The organization flourishes and buys more high-end properties. I wonder if their long-time resident workers can leave if they want to. My guess is that they don’t have two dimes to rub together and have alienated their friends and family outside of the ashrams.
Then the icing on the cake: Swami Vishnu-Devananda was apparently a sexual predator. Was he the only one? I suppose we’ll have to wait and see. I doubt it. I do know that there is another swami who has been outed for her constant verbal abuse. She is a direct disciple of Vishnu-Devananda.
I certainly can’t sit in satsang and chant praises to this man’s picture/statue anymore.

One noteable addition to this list is Swami Vivekananda Saraswati (aka Narcis Tarcau) of Agama Yoga on Koh Phangan in Thailand. He is a silver-tongued “alleged” serial sexual abuser (I have to use the word “alleged”). There were articles about this in the Guardian and other newspapers in 2018. Several of the victims are my friends. Agama Yoga are still operating. He is still head of the school. His minnions still write articles that claim all the allegations are lies. It truly makes me sick that this school is still openly operating in Thailand.
