Two years ago I interviewed the team at Samyak Yoga Teacher Training and they talked about the difference between Yoga in life versus life as yoga.
It was an illuminating interview where we covered many aspects of and details of yoga. Now the team are back to share deeper revelations on the way they lead their yoga teacher trainings, which they lead in India, Cambodia and Paris.
What is the heart of Samyak Yoga Teacher Training?
Love and Light! Yoga brings out the inner happiness. It allows the practitioner to find his/her light that is inside. As you get closer to the light, the Shine and the Brightness of the Light transforms the entire existence of an individual.
The heart of Samyak Yoga Teacher Training is to take students closer to their light, the divinity which is filled with Love. The entire existence of an individual gets transformed. Once the inner flower blossoms, the existence becomes a manifestation of love and light.
Why are you so passionate about Yoga Teacher Training?
I often heard people complaining that there are so many Yoga Teachers every where. I ask them;
“What’s wrong with it?”
Some might be good Yoga teachers, some might not be so good. But at least they have Yoga in their lives. Creating Yoga Teachers is like bringing one more light in the midst of all the darkness. The light of the Yoga Teacher will definitely shine and will lit so many other lights. There is a need of peace and love in the world and creating Yoga teachers is one of the best solutions.
We are very passionate about offering refined Yoga teachers from our Yoga Teacher Training programs. Yoga Teachers, we believe spread Light, inspire people to lead a positive life filled with Love and Freedom. Teaching and Practicing Yoga allows you to blossom integrally and lets others to get inspired by.
What are the factors that make a great Yoga Teacher?
Practice what you teach and being aware of the light inside are the two main factors that make a great Yoga teacher. Of course, having a good knowledge of Asanas, Pranayama etc, blended with sufficient practice, the philosophy behind the practice, the art of adjustments, voice modulation, positioning, adapting the classes based on the needs of the students etc will help you in becoming a better Yoga teacher.
As a Yoga teacher you have the responsibility to bring strength and flexibility, purity and healing, beyond all an inspiration to lead a better life of light. After the classes if your students carry this inspiration of a better life, you are on the way to become a better Yoga teacher.
What makes a great 200 hr yoga teacher training?
A beautiful combination of technical and spiritual aspects of the Yoga practice.
A trainee should receive sufficient knowledge of asanas in aspects such as how to practice them, the subtle alignments, the limitations, benefits and the variations for different levels, Art of Hands on Adjustments etc. The Yoga Teacher Training should also offer opportunities for the trainees to teach in small groups under the supervision of the trainers so that the trainee can get into the world of teaching every day.
The other part is the understanding of the deeper layers of the practice. It is not sufficient for a trainee to know how to practice and teach. He/she should also be explored in the deeper dimensions of the practice.
For instance, explore how asana practice can bring the state of meditation, how the Vrittis develop as Patanjali explains in his Yoga Sutras? How these vrittis can cause turbulence in the minds on and off the mat? what are the symptoms and how to keep the mind pleasant even in odd situations? How to keep the humbleness of the mind? etc. are the philosophical dimensions which substantiate the practice on and off the mat.
Both of these two faces of the practice blended well put forth, leading to an interest and inspiration to practice and teach Yoga is definitely a divine contribution to the society.
What’s the most important element to transmit in those 200 hrs? Is it alignment? Breath? Philosophy? Something else?
The passion of sharing Yoga.
In one of the Upanishads, there is a discussion about the primary duty of a practitioner/seeker. The Yogis discuss what can be the most significant duty of a seeker. They conclude after a long discussion as “Practice and Teaching”. One has to practice to teach and teach to practice. Both the aspects get refined each time you take up one.
During the training, though we emphasis on alignment, breathing, Philosophy of Yoga Sutras, how-to-practice on and off the mat, the most significant element is to kindle the passion of teaching. Teaching Yoga is a joyful act which touches your core of being while igniting the lights in the hearts of your students.
Is it possible to become a Yoga Teacher after 200 Hour training?
Yes and No! 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training is a foundation for you to become a Yoga Teacher. If you are choosing a good school, join the course with better preparation, the design of the course has balanced emphasis on practice and teaching, the course will definitely will be a strong foundation. But the foundation is not enough. A good school with passionate teachers can bring out the passion of teaching in you. But you have to carry on through all those opportunities which are offered to you in the beginning.
Teaching friends, teaching free classes, teaching families, teaching in community centers, etc. Teaching can’t be learnt by practicing only. You need to practice teaching Yoga. If you have the passion to share, passion to learn, ability to learn from the classes you taught, you will be a better Yoga teacher.
You can be a better Yoga teacher every day.
Can you tell after the teacher training which of your students will go on to become great teachers?
Teach what you practice and Practice what you teach.
Keep up the passion of sharing this beautiful wisdom of Yoga. There’s no stage when you get perfect and then start teaching. Your practice on the mat can definitely support the classes you teach but your experience of being a yoga teacher makes you better yoga teacher. You are a great teacher if you bring people on the mat and lead them to carry yoga off the mat.
Practicing Yoga on the mat is the beginning of a new journey which leads the person to a journey of Self-exploration of light, divinity and Love.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Every moment, even right now, when you are reading this piece of discussion, there are Yoga classes where in people are working with their breath and movements, in some other classes, at the end/beginning of their Yoga classes, people are offering their prayers for the best of the entire humanity, for the welfare of the entire universe which includes living and non-living beings.
In the modern situations where in every mind is filled with conflicts, affected by the violence, anger, hate and so many variations of negativity, a few people lightening the lamps of love and kindness, offer the prayers for the welfare of every one itself is such a beautiful act.
Keep the regular practice of Yoga and practice of teaching it. Share the wisdom of refining one’s self that even transforms people around him.
