Walking the Path with Kara-Leah Grant, Musings from the Mat

Kara-Leah, Musings from the Mat columnist

by Kara-Leah Grant, Musings from the Mat As I slowly introduce more regular columnists to The Yoga Lunchbox, you'll be getting to know them via this written interview. So it's only fair that I do the interview myself, even though I've now been writing my column Musings from the Mat for over three years. Some of you have been here right from the beginning of that journey, so know me well. Very well! But others have only recently begun reading the website, so this may fill in a few … [Read more...]

Top Ten Yoga Videos online, Part 1

Seane Corn on YouTube

Some months ago I published an article called Top Ten best yoga websites and articles on the web. It had an enthusiastic response and has since gone on to be one of the top five articles on the site. At the time, readers suggested/requested a do a top ten list of yoga videos on the 'net. I thought it was a great idea, but had no idea where to start. I wasn't in the habit of watching yoga videos online, so couldn't really do a top ten list. Until now. Lately, I've discovered a new world … [Read more...]

A day in the life of a Prana Flow teacher trainee

Shiva Rea

Ever since I first took a Prana Flow teacher training module with Twee Merrigan in Wellington, I'd been dreaming of going to study with Shiva Rea, Master Prana Flow teacher, in the USA. Something was always in the way though... I was working as a speechwriter paying the mortgage on the house my partner was renovating. I was pregnant. Then I had a new born baby boy, Samuel. All the while, I'd keep an eye on what Shiva was up to, where she was teaching, what courses were on offer. Nothing … [Read more...]

Diving into the flow of Fluid Power

Sculpture on Venice Beach, LA, California

It's day number.... something? on my Prana Flow teacher training with Shiva Rea. The training is at Exhale Spa, Venice, California and the apartment I'm staying in with another student is a short walk along Venice Beach. Ah Venice Beach... like no other I've ever encountered. Shops and cafes on one side... a wide pavement of walkers, bikers, rollarbladers & skaters, dogs and skateboards in the middle... and vendors, musicians, and hanger-ons on the other side. Beyond the vendors … [Read more...]

How a non-certified yoga teacher with no guru ended up teaching (and should she be?)

Kara-Leah playing in asana

This is a question I have contemplated many times since teaching was first thrust upon me. And it's also one this website has explored extensively in recent weeks. After reading all of the responses from other teachers, I began to wonder... how on earth can I call myself a yoga teacher? I have no qualifications. I've never attended a teacher training of any real length. I've never studied under a guru, nor a teacher for any length of time. I'm a long way from mastering asana to any … [Read more...]

Witnessing the evolution of yoga from Vinyasa to Prana Flow to Flow Motion to Your Yoga

Sarah Tomson Beyer on Yoga Journal

I love this video (see below)... it's Sarah Tomson Beyer doing her brand of yoga, Flowmotion - and yes, that's trademarked. But don't get upset about it, because who cares, it's all about the yoga right? And when I watch Sarah, I see such beauty, such grace, such inspiration... and I want to be able to do that, feel that, be that. In my own way of course ;) … [Read more...]
