Ever since I can remember, I have been pretty bad at any sporting endeavour.

I was the girl picked last for the net ball teams – hand eye coordination not good, didn’t like team sports or competition. I spent most of my life in fruitless physical endeavours (think jazzercise and thongs) for although I was rubbish at most exercise, I loved to move.

I got lead rather quietly into yoga after a stint as a Les Mills teacher for body balance, officially arriving on my mat in September 2010 with a teacher training course through Power Living in Australia.

The style of yoga I teach is Hot Power Vinyasa, it’s hot and sweaty, kind of like the rock and roll of yoga. When you do this style of yoga you sweat all your badness out of you, physically and mentally.

I have been teaching at Abundance Studio for a year so I still consider myself a yoga baby, unenlightened and unable to levitate but I love yoga. It suits my body and mind and my thirst for knowledge. My name is Gabrielle Harris, I am 47, I live in the suburbs. I am the Suburban Yogini.

The writings flow out of me. One of my teachers says that the universe will work through you if you connect to something you love, and that’s what it’s like to write about yoga. It’s a tidal wave that I can’t stop and I am so joyful to have the opportunity to do this. The words come from my teachings in the classroom and my thoughts in real world, like it says ‘keeping it real’.

Isn’t it great when you find something you love? If you haven’t found that thing please keep searching and trying and experimenting. Life can be a very effective therapy. Don’t give up, keep looking and you will find the love for something so strong it pulls you out of time and into that sweet spot that we all search for.

Presence.

Namaste
