I always learn something new every time I read this article, even though I’m not really a beginner. It makes me smile.
And you were right when you said:
“I’m so confident that yoga will get you hooked, that you’ll find it really hard to only come once a week.”
because I really do struggle not to go to yoga class more often! (although even though I can’t really afford to go 2 class more often, I go anyway
Hi. I’m 60 and a half, I have Hemochromatosis, Iron Overload Disease, and a good deal of joint damage as a result. I’m getting ready to have my left knee replaced in about a month, and I was looking for exercises that would strengthen my quadriceps and gain flexibility, to shorten the post-op discomforts, and instead I found you.
I am hoping to be back on my Tennessee Walker mare Jenna, by this coming Spring. Kara-Leah, I’m pretty BS resistant, but I found something about your delivery interesting to the point of inspiration.
As a result, I’m going to look a little further into Yoga. I have an acquaintance who is I think pretty deep into it, and has been for years. That says something, but I’m not sure what. Any suggestions you might have would be great, and anyway, Thank you for grabbing my attention and curiosity for a moment. I might learn something here….

That’s fantastic. I’m glad I made it past your BS Detector, and have inspired you to go and explore Yoga.
I would suggest asking many people about yoga, and looking at many different books.
I’d also suggest finding a good yoga therapist you can work with one-on-one – someone who can tailor a practice for your needs, and teach it to you in such a way that you understand what you’re doing and why, and you feel confident enough to practice at home.
If you don’t like the first yoga teacher you find, keep trying out different teachers. You need to connect with your teacher, and trust that they know their shit.
Yoga is the science of life, and it is experiential. That means you try it out and see what works for you. You pay attention to what it feels like for your body, and your trust your own intuition and judgement. While having a healthy dose of scepticism about the ways that we can deceive ourselves sometimes…

I did have my knee replaced on the 28th of November, and have been going through Physical therapy three days a week since. I now can get my knee to go to 3 degrees short of straight, and 110 degrees bent. 120 was what my surgeon wanted, but my leg is stronger each day, with less pain slowly but surely. The knee works great, I walk better than I have in years, smooth and normal. I was surprised by the amount of swelling and muscle soreness for the entire month of December. A few more weeks and I’ll try your advice and see if I can find a one-on-one therapist to get me started allowing for my limitations.
I’ll let you know my impressions when I try Yoga for a while.
